Earth Day 2008
Today is Earth Day. Frankly speaking I was unaware of the event until I noticed the customized Yahoo! logo last night.
Google is well-known for changing its logo on special occasions. Yahoo! and AOL are also going with the trends these days.

I gave two widely circulated newspapers a glance today during breakfast; did not find any coverage on Earth Day on a prominent place. It’s good to see that Search Engines are educating people on such a crucial topic.
Earth Day has a long history and it is better to read wikipedia to know more about Earth Day. Basically it is a day to think about our planet. Earth is our home in this universe, sooner we realize the fact the better.
However, Earth Day is not all about changing LOGO. We need to do something in real. Let’s take up an oath today. All of us reading this blog post would make Earth greener by doing at least the following things:
- tree plantation
- taking care of existing green fields
- preventing water wastage
- raising our voice to make rainwater harvesting mandatory in India
Let’s start it from today. We will come back here on April 22, 2009 to check our progress.

I was thinking about putting a small indoor tree in my desk.

Thanks Debamalya, but writing comment is not enough for Our Earth. Please follow the steps that I mentioned in the post. If you have any other suggestions, say it here.
April 22nd, 2008 at 8:11 am
You have given suggestions. For example tree plantation; but how? Do you really find any place in kolkata to plant trees properly.next water shortage; how to prevent the water shortage? When the shortage already exist then how to prevent it.Show me the place to harvest the rainwater in Kolkata… I will raise voice for this. Just giving suggestion is the work of "Buddigibi" but do you ever gone to the root of the problem. I don’t think so…Don’t mind…. plz.. even I also never thought about it.

I think creating logo is much more difficult than planting trees!
April 22nd, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Gourab, then please plant a lot of trees around you. That will help all of us indeed.
April 23rd, 2008 at 7:05 am
Indeed it is very important post. We need to be conscious about our environment. Your ideas of making our environment green is really appreciable. Hope all of us will do something.
April 23rd, 2008 at 7:14 am
Thanks Biplab. All of us can perform our own bit of responsibilities at our own level. And the accumulated result would save our planet. Why don’t you take part in the Earth Week Contest?
April 23rd, 2008 at 7:00 pm
I have gone through the posts and the replies everyone gave. It is a great thing to think that at least we have started to think about the environment and its greenness. It is good that everyone wants to start thinking of how we can keep our environment green. But none of them I have read has said that I do at least a tree plantation each year. I am associated with a cultural organization in our area and we do a tree plantation program each year in the first Sunday after the monsoon starts. I also admit this issue that space problem is a major problem that hinders us from doing such kind of tree planting program. It is also true that if we want we can plant and nurse at least one plant in our roof, terrace and in Verandah. So we should not say that we would do, we should say we have done. Let’s plant a sapling and start nursing and join to the campaign of “Save Green, Save Earth”

Not only planting trees…. there’s a lot more that we can do. I make it a point that I am not wasting water. Minimum use of plastic bags is also important. This year I could not plant any tree. But we were happy that we could save a tree, in our locality last month. People from a sports club wanted to cut it down for increasing their practice area.

Yes, you are right. Planting trees is one way, there are several others. As I mentioned in the post, rainwater harvesting is very important, otherwise huge drinking water crisis is inevitable.
And thanks Joy for your comments. The idea of plantation during monsoon sounds great. You should also take part in the Earth Week Contest.

I think plantation is one kind of nourishment of nature. It is totally a different culture of that people who have great thoughts about the future of our earth, really it is a big and universal issues. But one thing we should remember that we should not mixed up another topics such as logo design with it,because we all known that now many people have tendency to use search engines (i.e Google,Yahoo,AOL…) for their common purpose and those search engine companies are just highlighting that universal issues to the world, they always try to memorize the value of plantation to the world through their logo and whatever they can.
Thanks to the search engines for reminding us the value and the duty we should do..

It is an evergreen subject which also requires similar evergreen mass solutions to address such an important and vital issue. The fourth point requires immediate support from the decision makers too. Are you hearing? …
April 24th, 2008 at 7:53 am
I agree with you Gopal. Those logos make people inquisitive and increases awareness. That is why we started the Earth Week Contest. Please participate.
Thanks for your comment Asitabhda; actually we need to shout louder to make them listen to us. Let’s start spreading the words and make it a BUZZ!

It’s good to see that so many people thinks about the greens. It is very essential for us to save green and encourage other people to do so. Good effort by you Gopal.
